The theme is about agriculture in its broadest sense. The quail and turkeys are wild in California, but have been reared for food. Even herons have been used to catch fish, although the herons depicted here has somebody coming to feed them (open face sandwiches! and they love it) and five herons congregate around the bench where he sits.
